This studyrelates dermatoglyphic patterns with the specific positive and negativesymptoms of the disease in 72 DSM-III-R defined schizophreniaand 72 normal unrelated ethnically matched controls. Schizophrenicsubjects had significant lower ridge counts in both hands.Fluctuating asymmetry in the a-b ridge counts was significantly lowerin schizophrenic subjects (0.50 vs 0.70, p<0.05). The positive andnegative symptom scale (PANSS) was used to determine symptomseverity. Schizophrenics with predominantly negative symptomsshowed significantly lower counts and higher fluctuating asymmetrythan schizophrenics with positive symptoms. Our study showed findings congruent with the hypothesis thatschizophrenia could be related to central nervous system developmentalabnormalities. 2001 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58212405 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.1 Vol.24
