  • Marcadores diagnósticos y mecanismos neuroquímicos de la encefalopatía secundaria a la insuficiencia hepática Héctor A. Ortega Soto Carlos A. Hernandez Avila Medicina neurochemistry benzodiazepines diagnostic markers Hepatic encephalopathy Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a complex neuropsychiatric disordersecondary to acute or chronic failure of the liver. No specific diagnosticmarkers for this condition are available and the exact neuro-chemicalmechanism underlying this condition is unknown. The neurotoxic effects of ammonia accumulation, the production of "false neurotransmitters", and the enhancement of the inhibitory GABAergictone in the CNS have been proposed as plausible mechanisms for this disorders. Nevertheless, researches exploring these hypotheseshave yielded contradictory findings. Several reports suggest that theincreased levels of endogenous benzodiazepine receptor ligands(BZDRL) may play a role in the pathogenesis of HE, though theevidence supporting this hypothesis is inconclusive. This suggeststhat neuropsychiatric symptoms in HE are difficult to explain only interms of the accumulation of these compounds. 2001 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58212408 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.1 Vol.24
