Alfredo Saldívar Rodolfo Rodríguez Medicina Anxiety animal models defense reactions Recent evidence suggests that function and brain structure areevolutionary related in several species. This historical relationshipbetween different mammal species allows the study of higherhuman mental functions in animals under normal and pathologicalconditions. This idea constitutes theoretical support for theapplication of the experimental method in Psychiatry. Themodeling of psychiatric illness in animals represents today animportant chapter of medical and biological research conceptuallysupported by the above-described ideas. The introduction intothe clinic of the chlorpromazine, an aliphatic phenotiazine, atthe beginning of the 50´s. resulted in a turning point in thedevelopment of experimental psychiatry. This fact was essentialfor the introduction of the experimental approach. Artificial ornatural development of psychosis in humans could be observedunder different medical conditions such as neurosyphilis, endocrinopathies; hypo and/or hyperthyroidism, head trauma, alcoholism and heavy metal intoxication ( arsenicum, plumbium, andcadmium). At the end of the 40´s Hoffman synthesized acompound able to strong disorganize a human or animal behavior, the lysergic diethialamide acid “LSD” even at very low doses.Nevertheless, the possibility of pharmacological correction ofpsychotic symptoms represented the real core for a radical changein the understanding of the neurological basis of higher mentalfunction disturbances. This paradigmatic change could not occurin the absence of a pharmacological treatment of psychoticsymptoms... 2002 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58212504 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.1 Vol.25
