contents Los trastornos psiquiátricos y el abuso de sustancias en México: Panorama epidemiológico Jorge J. Caraveo Eduardo Colmenares Medicina Prevalence comorbidity psychiatric disorders substance abuse and dependence Developmental psychopathology in adults has focused in thestudy of comorbidity. The objective of this report is to present theprevalence of specific psychiatric disorders in terms of the DSMIII-R and to revise and discuss some of the results of comorbidityfound between substance use and psychiatric disorders in MexicoCity as compared to other results that have emerged from theanalyses in the International Consortium of PsychiatricEpidemiology (ICPE). The importance of this type of comorbidityrelies on the fact that: 1) lifetime mental and substance comorbidityis associated with chronicity; 2) impairment and suicidal risk isincreased; 3) prevention of the development of this comorbiditycould have important prevention effects; 4) the understanding ofthe patterns and correlates of the onset of this type of comorbidityis an urgent need.Method Method: Data were obtained through a household survey in arepresentative stratified sample of the adult population aged 18to 65 years in Mexico City, excluding its conurban areas. Theresponse rate was 60.4%. The total sample was 1 932 subjects, although for the ICPE comparisons only the 1 734 subjects, aged18 to 54 years, were included. An amended version of theComposite International Diagnostic Interview 1.1 (CIDI) was usedand diagnoses were made following the DSM-III-R criteria. Oddsratios were obtained to measure the association betweensubstance use and psychiatric disorders... 2002 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58222502 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.2 Vol.25
