Criticism hasbeen focused in two aspects: a) variability in the definitionsand lack of clinical consensus, and b) the possibleinfluence of culture in the establishment of couple relationships,particularly in terms of power, which seems toput women in a disadvantageous situation in comparisonwith men.Nevertheless, codependency seems to be a useful andnecessary construct because it gives a name to a groupof difficulties in terms of interpersonal relations and selfperceptions.It also represents an existing problem whichcan seriously affect the physical and mental health particularlyof women.
