contents Conductas alimentarias de riesgo y distribución del Indice de Masa Corporal en estudiantes de 13 a 18 años Jorge Villatoro Teresita Saucedo Molina Clara Fleiz Claudia Unikel Medicina Mexico Body Mass Index bulimia nervosa anorexia nervosa Risk eating behaviors Objective: To learn about the relationship betweenpercentilar Body Mass Index and risk eating behaviorsin Mexican adolescents.Method: A sample of 7 597 adolescents between 13 and18 years was obtained from the Drug and AlcoholPrevalence in the Student Population Survey of MexicoCity in 1997. A self report questionnaire of 11 items wasused to assess their eating behavior during the threeprevious months before applying the survey. Comparisonsby sex and age were carried out. Results: The data showed a trend to present higherpercentages of risk eating behaviors as Body Mass Indexand age increases. Although this same trend was observedin both sexes, women show higher means of clinicalsymptoms compared to men. In agreement to the resultsobtained, it may be concluded that 1.5% of the menbetween 13 and 15 years, and 2.2% of the men between16 and 18 years meet the risk criteria for developing aneating disorder, while these percentages increase up to5.4% in women between 13 and 18 years and up to 16.1%in women between 16 and 18 years. It was observed thatadolescents with overweight are those who meet higherpercentages of risk eating behaviors. This fact indicatesthat overweight must be considered as an importantpredisponent characteristic for the development of eatingdisorders. The small percentage of adolescents with lowand very low weight that presents risk eating behaviors, also deserve our attention, as their eating behavior mightbe motivated by body image distortion (they perceivethemselves fatter than they really are). Conclusions: This data show that 1) There is arelationship between Body Mass Index and risk eatingbehaviors, and that 2) Overweight and low weight shouldboth be considered as risk factors for the developmentof eating disorders. 2002 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58222507 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.2 Vol.25
