  • Assessment of daytime symptoms in snoring subjects and obstructive sleep apnea patients Ana Isabel Sánchez Gualberto Buela Casal Medicina Apnea memory snoring sleepiness neuroticism The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a type of sleep disorderthat has called the attention of many researchers because ofits widespread distribution among middle-aged subjects. The OSASis a respiratory problem characterized by the existence of apneas, defined as 10 second minimum intervals during which no aerialflux exchange takes place through the upper airways and thehypopneas not characterized by an arrest, but by a reduction ofaerial flux through the upper airways. The most widespread index used in the diagnosis of the OSASseverity has been the apnea/hypopnea index (AHI). There is littleconsensus based on the apnea/hypopnea index regarding the clinicaldefinition of the sleep apnea syndrome, as there is not a singlecriterion for the categorization of sleep apnea patients into severitylevels.Nowadays, it is estimated that about 70% of the patients referredto sleep laboratories suffer from snoring, and it is suspectedthat they might also suffer from sleep apnea. Obstructive sleepapnea patients may suffer from memory and cognitive problems, excessive daytime sleepiness, as well as mood disturbance, amongother symptoms. Additionally, this disorder has severe medicaland social consequences. One of the most characteristic symptoms in sleep apnea is snoring.Although snoring is one of the symptoms of sleep apnea, itshould be remembered it is a typical phenomenon among populationin general. There is a primary kind of snoring, the most frequenttype in less severe cases, which even occurs among the normalpopulation. In this case, the noise accompanying inspirationis made with almost every breath. Secondly, there is another kindof snoring that is either intermittent or cyclic, and snoring doesnot come with every breath but silent periods are also frequent. The latter indicates apnea. 2007 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58230102 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.1 Vol.30
