  • Prevalencia del consumo de bebidas alcohólicas y problemas asociados en personas de la tercera edad que acuden a los servicios de atención primaria de la ciudad de México Agustín Vélez Dorisvelia Berumen Luis R. Solís Medicina Alcoholism alcohol abuse elderly services Alcoholism is a major challenge for public health because ofits effects in the individual and the family as well as theeconomic burden that represents for both, health systems andsociety. In an epidemiologic perspective, alcohol abuse andalcoholism are relevant problems for the Mexican population,as the main causes of mortality are alcohol related casueltiesand diseases. Nowadays it is well known that elderly peopleis more vulnerable to health problems related to alcohol abuse, than the younger populations. Some of this pathology includes:depression, nutritional disorders, heart problems, falls andpremature death. Nevertheless, we still don’t know too muchabout the epidemiology of alcohol abuse among the Mexicanelderly people. A survey among 700 users of health services,of 65 years of age and older, was performed in 19 primaryhealth care centers in Mexico City. Alcohol use among subjectsattending health services during a typical week was evaluatedby asking them at what age they began to drink, the amountof alcohol which they drank and the associated problems. Results show a life time prevalence of alcohol use of 36.7%.On the other hand, one month prevalence was 20.5%. Bothfigures are lower than the findings of the National Survey onAddictions. We also discuss some findings on the differentprevalences found among men and women in this study, andthose from the National Survey on Addictions. The patterns ofconsumption referred to by the surveyed population does notshow a relevant problem of alcohol use among the elderly.Only a small proportion (2.4%) reported drinking more alcoholicbeverages how than six months ago, while 3.8% of theparticipants reported alcohol related problems... 2000 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58232305 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.3 Vol.23
