contents El estado de ánimo de la mujer durante su ciclo reproductivo María Raquel Huerta Franco Medicina anxiety Depression self esteem females gender International and Mexican population findings repeatedlyconfirm that women diagnosed with mood disorders greatlyoutnumber men, being one of the most consistent findings inpsychiatric research. The risk that women will experience anaffective episode associated with her female gender, may besurpassed only by the high risk associated with a family historyof affective disorders. Despite the clear association betweengender and affective disorders, the causes are decidedlyunclear. The reasons for this lack of understanding arecomplex, but stem largely from the limitations that haveprivented researchers from studying the specific vulnerabilityfactors for mood disorders in women: a widely varying set ofhypotheses that attempt to explain the suspected cause, incidence, symptoms, and comorbidities from variousperspectives. Several complex factors, however haveprevented attempting the study of why are so vulnerable tomood disorders. This prevented article examines the problemsassociated with the study of affective disorders in women andreviews the results of studies in the Mexican population comparingit with the international data. This article discusses thefrequency and intensity of symptoms of depression, anxiety,non-specific symptoms of depression and self-esteem in thedifferent biological stages of women’s life. The differences betweenthe biology of men and women are described, and thepotential biological, social, psychological, and environmentalfactors that might particularly promote the development of thewomen’s mood disorders are presented. 2000 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58232307 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.3 Vol.23
