José Francisco Cortés Gabriela Galindo y Villa Judith Salvador Medicina cognition Neuropsychology problem solving verbal thought Various investigations indicate that perseveration is a commonneuropsychological sign of schizophrenia, resulting from thelack of cognitive flexibility, secondary to the dysfunction of thefrontal lobe. However, from a semiological point of view, perseverationmay have different neuropsychological meanings. In most of the results obtained by means of the application ofthe Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) this sign has beeninterpreted as a direct consequence of the incapability ofpatients for making a fast comparative change between thedifferent concepts and for adopting diferent perspectives abouta concept without analyzing other possible causes of failurein the fulfillment of this task. The purpose of this work was thatof analyzing in detail the different dimensions of the WCST forevaluating, in a semiologic way, the nature of the perseverativeanswers. This instrument was the applied to a group of 30paranoid schizophrenic patients, compared to 30 healthysubjects, paired by age, sex and academic education. The group was compared by means of simple ANOVA inthe three WCST dimensions, and two matrixes of partialcorrelations, controlled by the number of asseys used foranalyzing the relation between these variables; the correlationcoefficients obtained for each group were compared by meansof Fisher’s Z contrasts. Finally, the answering trains (positiveand negative) were analyzed by means of Grant’s G2 test fortridimensional contingence tables. Results suggest thatschizophrenic patients have important deficiencies forconfronting this paradigm, and actually commit a significantlyhigher number of perseverative answers. However, perseverationin these patients, more than reflecting their lack ofcognitive flexibility, seem to relate to deffects in the abstractionand comprehension of the problem. 2000 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58242304 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.4 Vol.23
