| contents | Moon cycle effects on humans: myth or reality? Hans G. Erkert Jairo Muñoz Ana María Santillán Ricardo Mondragón Medicina humans primates behaviour Lunar cycles For centuries, it has been of popular belief that the moon cycleinfluences human physiology and behavior. This is an idea which can be most suitably explained by chronobiology, giventhat the organisms behavioral patterns are the result of theinteraction between their endogenous temporal programswhich are the cause of biological rhythms and their tuning toexternal stimuli, both environmental and social. However, nonnaturaleffects, such as city noise and electric light, amongothers, may mask such interactions. Research on this subjecthas looked for the causal relation between moon cycles andphysiological factors, such as: admissions to psychiatrichospitals, mental trauma, abnormal behaviour, criminal activity, suicidal attempts and homocide. Novertheless, this has beenslanted to epidemiological studies with extensive populationsamples, obtaining contradictory results, most likely due tothe statistical analyses used. The relation between moon cyclesand sleep-awake phases in human beings has not been studiedexhaustively and, therefore, has not provided convincing results. On the other hand, there are systematic studies usingmethods that are more robust in non-human animal species, purporting strong evidence concerning the activity rhythmalteration in relation to the moon phase. Therefore, todistinguish the factors that are probably masking the mooncycles effects on human life, it is necessary to carry out studieswith more systematic recording methods and observations. 2000 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58262305 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.6 Vol.23 |
