contents Perspectiva neurobiológica de la esquizofrenia Ariel Graff Rogelio Apiquian Ana Fresán María García Medicina dopamine neurobiology Schizophrenia neurodevelopment This review examines several biochemical systems related toschizophrenia and their interaction with their physiopathology.Until now, the explanation has been based in just one biochemicaltheory to explain the etiology of schizophrenia.Dopamine has been one of the primary neurotransmittersinvolved in the etiology of schizophrenia. The actual statementof dopaminergic functioning lays over the presence of ahypodopaminergic functioning in the prefrontal cortex and ahyperdopaminergic state, principally in basal ganglia. On theother hand, an increase in prefrontal dopaminergic activityreduces dopaminergic concentration in the striatum.Serotonin inhibits dopamine release on the nigral substance, the striatum and prefrontal cortex; this could explain thepresence of extrapyramidal symptoms when using ofserotoninergic agonists. Serotoninergic antagonists facilitateprefrontal dopamine release and improve negative symptoms. This mechanism explains the effects of atypical antipsychoticsover negative symptoms.Antagonists of 5-HT3 do not induce changes over primarydopaminergic activity, but they diminishe dopamine releasemediated by stress, so that these substances can have aprophylactic effect over relapses induced by stress inschizophrenic patients... 2001 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58262405 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.6 Vol.24
