  • La sangría como recurso terapéutico en las enfermedades mentales en el México del siglo XIX Ma. Blanca Ramos de Viesca Andrés Aranda Cruzalta Benjamín Dultzin Carlos Viesca T. Medicina treatments Bloodletting psychiatry history Mexican psychiatry Bloodletting was a therapeutic resource issuing from the Galeno-Hippocratical medical tradition. It was applied to purge or depleteone or more humors excessively produced by or accumulated insome organ or part of the body. The bloodletting procedure was introduced in Mexico by theSpaniards during the Conquest. The early medical authors, AgustínFarfán and Alonso López de Hinojosos, recommended it for almostevery illness. In Mexico, bloodletting became useless at the end ofthe XIXth Century, when new physiopathological ideas, includingthose related to cellular theory, were accepted. In the XIXth Century, the vigent concept about plethoric stateswas formulated in physiological terms: after initial excitation orirritation steps, the blood vessels responded with vasoconstrictionfollowed by vasodilatation, and consequently blood flowed inproportional quantity to inflammation; after that, blood becamestagnant and then bloodletting had beneficial effects over plethoraand regulation over nervous system. Plethora’s symptoms were:torpidity, malaise, cerebral fatigue, headache, flushes, andsomnolence. People at risk of having plethora were individualswith sanguineous temperament, sedentary women mainly if theyhad mentrual disturbances and during pregnancy. Bloodlettingwas employed in Mexico to treat mental diseases. Ignacio deBartolache recommended it to hysterical patients; his reportedresults were poor. In the XIXth Century, international medicalliterature consulted by Mexican medical practitioners, as werethe works by Pinel, Broussais, Esquirol, Ellis, Morel, bloodlattingwas indicated in hysteria, mania, melancholical sates, catalepsy, demency, sonambulism, epilepsy, apoplexy, hypocondria, andidiotism. At San Hipolito Hospital, bloodletting was practiced inindividuals with sanguineous temperament, apoplectic, with cerebralcongestion and its use in mania was restricted. Thebloodletting method was leeches application for local extractionor general bloodletting by vessel incision. Bloodletting is a goodexample to show how medical treatments can adjust to new medicaltheories. 2002 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58262507 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.6 Vol.25
