  • Placentation patterns and seed number in fruits of South American Solanum subgen. Leptostemonum (Solanaceae) species Franco E. Chiarini Gloria E. Barboza Biología Solanum seed number Andromonoecy placentation Leptostemonum Thirty-seven South American species representing seven sections of Solanum subgen. Leptostemonumwere analyzed. Andromonoecious as well as hermaphrodite species were considered. Thelength and width of their fruits was measured, and the number of seeds per fruit was counted. Medialcross sections of fresh, ripe fruits were observed with a stereoscopic microscope and illustrated. Sixplacentation patterns and three types of seeds were described. A relationship among seed number, fruitsize, fruit color and sexual system was detected by means of statistical analysis. These results suggestthat andromonoecy affects fruit size and placentation patterns, in order to contain a higher number ofseeds per fruit. 2007 artículo científico 0011-6793 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=66945202 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=669 Darwiniana application/pdf Instituto de Botánica Darwinion Darwiniana (Argentina) Num.2 Vol.45
