- KEY FACTORS THAT ENABLE THE PEASANTS IN THE CABUYAL TERRITORIAL SUBDIVISION IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF PALMIRA, VALLE DEL CAUCA, COLOMBIA TO ENDURE José Luis Sánchez Multidisciplinarias (Ciencias Sociales) peasantry endurance Rural development social construction Taking into account the accelerated changes in how food is produced, this paper discusses the key factors enabling peasants to endure in the village (vereda) of Cabuyal, a rural administrative area in the municipality of Palmira, in the department of Cauca Valley, Columbia. A total of 22 interviews were conducted with young women and elderly adults. The results show diverse ways of appropriating territory, depending on the particular features of: a) the distribution of dwellings and plots, b) the adoption of high commercial value crops, c) the adoption of agricultural tools and technology. Two ways of accessing the land were also found: firstly, the land owner grants the ‘harvester’ a part of the property for agricultural exploitation and shares the other costs; secondly, there is a leasing contract called a ‘percentage’ by which the owner only provides the land while the farmer assumes all other production costs. These factors contribute to the fact that agricultural practices persist as the main economic activity at a household level. The research integrates qualitative and quantitative methodologies. 2018 artículo científico 2395-9177 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=688378266007 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=6883 Textual application/pdf Universidad Autónoma Chapingo Textual (México) Num.72
