contents The effects of pharmacist interventions on patients with polypharmacy Leslie C. Robinson Elinor C. Chumney Medicina Pharmacists Polypharmacy Drug Therapy Polypharmacy, the state of being prescribed ortaking more medications than clinically appropriate, can result in a variety of negative outcomes for bothpatients and healthcare facilities. These includenegative outcomes such as adverse drug effects, hospitalizations, and poor patient health, as well aseconomic outcomes such as increased drug costand costs associated with increased utilization ofhealth services. Available data suggestspharmacists have the potential to have a largeeffect in combating this problem through a variety ofinterventions such as reducing the number ofmedications taken, reducing the number of dosestaken, increasing patient adherence, preventingadverse drug reactions (ADRs), improving patientquality of life and decreasing facility and drug costs.A small number of studies have been performed onthe pharmacists´ role in addressing the problem ofpolypharmacy; however, they include variouspopulations, settings, and measured outcomes.Furthermore, some of the results are conflicting.Nonetheless, this review of the available literatureconcludes that pharmacist interventions canimprove patient outcomes. With the ever-increasingcosts of healthcare, the substantial cost savings forpatients as well as institutions provided by theseinterventions are further justification for widespreadimplementation of pharmacist interventions athealthcare institutions. 2006 artículo científico 1885-642X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=69040301 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=690 Pharmacy Practice application/pdf Centro de investigaciones y Publicaciones Farmacéuticas Pharmacy Practice (España) Num.3 Vol.4
