Borders Medicina Ethics Pharmacy Postcoital Pharmacists Contraception Background: The pharmacist’s role in dispensingemergency contraception (EC) has becomecontroversial due to the intersection of personal andprofessional ethics. Therefore, to examine the issueof EC availability, we surveyed a sample of WestTexas pharmacists. West Texas is a religiously andpolitically conservative region where no methods ofEC have been made available. Objective: to survey a sample of pharmacists inWest Texas about their experience, beliefs, andknowledge of EC both before and after apresentation of the current literature about EC.Methods: We asked a convenience sample of 75pharmacists about their experience, beliefs, andknowledge of EC both before and after apresentation of the current literature about EC.Results: Sixty-four (85%) pharmacists agreed tocomplete the study questionnaire. None carries ECin his/her pharmacy, and scientific understanding ofEC was generally poor. Fourteen percent stated ECconflicts with their religious views, 17% consideredit a method of abortion, 11% would not be willing tofill an EC prescription written by a doctor. 58%would be willing to offer EC over the counter. Thepresentation encouraged more to offer it over thecounter, but in general did not significantly changetheir beliefs. Conclusion: Our sample of West Texas pharmacistsdemonstrated very little experience with, a generallack of knowledge about, and some personal andreligious objections to EC. 2006 artículo científico 1885-642X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=69040401 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=690 Pharmacy Practice application/pdf Centro de investigaciones y Publicaciones Farmacéuticas Pharmacy Practice (España) Num.4 Vol.4
