- Immigration within European Union-Does health immigration make a difference in analgesic use? Minna H. Väänänen Marja Airaksinen Kirsi Pietilä Medicina Spain Finland Analgesics Emigration and Immigration Health Services Needs and Demand European integration has facilitated the emigrationinside Europe and it has been predicted that theamount of immigrants in Southern Europeancountries will increase in the future. As these peopleage and their morbidity increases, they will demandmore services from local health care thanimmigrants do at the moment. The aim of this study is to determine the amount ofFinnish people who have moved to Spain for healthreasons (health immigrants) and whether theirhealth service and analgesic usage patterns differedfrom those of non-health immigrants. Methods: This study was carried out among Finnishpeople living in Costa del Sol area, southern Spain. The data were collected by questionnaire during2002 by using a convenience sample of 1,000 Finnsliving permanently in the area (response rate 53%,n=530). Statistical analyses were conducted usingstatistical software SPSS 11.5.Results: Two-thirds of the respondents werecategorised as health immigrants. Healthimmigrants were more often suffering from chronicmorbidity, their perceived health status was poorerand they used public health services more oftenthan the non-health immigrants. Half (50%) of the allrespondents had used some analgesics during thetwo weeks before the survey. There were moreanalgesic users among the health immigrant group(54 % vs. 43 %, p = 0.034) and they also usedanalgesics more frequently than the non-healthimmigrants (27 % vs. 9 %, p= 0.020).Conclusions: Our study indicates, that high amountof Finnish immigrants suffer from some degree ofhealth problems and the health state factors have alarge influence on the emigration into Spain. As thiskind of trend might also exist among immigrantsfrom other EU-nations, immigrants might burden thelocal Spanish health care services in the future. Therefore the Providers of health care services inimmigrant areas should consider these trends inplanning health care in the future. 2006 artículo científico 1885-642X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=69040402 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=690 Pharmacy Practice application/pdf Centro de investigaciones y Publicaciones Farmacéuticas Pharmacy Practice (España) Num.4 Vol.4
