  • Towards supporting scholarship in research by clinical pharmacy faculty A. Simon Pickard Medicina Faculty pharmacy Education United States Research Support Objective: The objective of this study was to assessthe need for research support, faculty development, and topics of interest to clinical track pharmacyfaculty that would facilitate scholarship in research. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of pharmacypractice-based faculty at University of Illinois atChicago (UIC) completed via the web in November2005.Results: Of 39 clinical track faculty respondents(48% response rate), 100% indicated they wereinterested in being co-investigator or 77% leadinvestigator on a research grant proposal. Themajority of respondents expressed “a lot” or“extreme” interest in receiving methodologicalguidance and administrative support in order topursue research interests. The greatest interest inresearch support services related to sample sizecalculations, selection of appropriate statisticaltests, grant writing, and writing for journals. Barriersto research cited by faculty included lack ofconfidence in ability, the need for balancingresponsibilities, and reward for efforts. Suggestionsincluded the creation of specific research interestgroups, research seminars, formal mentoring andstatistical support services. Conclusions: Clinical-track faculty are interested inresearch-related scholarship but typically lack theconfidence or skills to lead research. While thisstudy was limited to UIC clinical faculty, UIC facultyare attracted from Colleges of Pharmacy acrossNorth America and it is notable that such barrierscan be quickly identified using a brief web-basedsurvey in order to inform a plan that providesresources and support for research by clinicalpharmacy faculty. 2006 artículo científico 1885-642X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=69040407 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=690 Pharmacy Practice application/pdf Centro de investigaciones y Publicaciones Farmacéuticas Pharmacy Practice (España) Num.4 Vol.4
