Wertheimer Medicina Herbal Faculty Medicine utilization Pharmacists United States sales of dietary supplementsexceeded $18 billion in 2002, indicating that dietarysupplement use is common among the Americanpublic. This report describes a survey of academicpharmacists and their use of dietary supplementsand herbs. To date, most data comes from retail orcommunity pharmacists, so a survey was developedto collect information regarding dietary supplementand herb usage from academic pharmacists.Academic pharmacists are probably the mostknowledgeable group in regards to assessing theclinical value of supplements.Our results showed that 54% of academicpharmacists have used dietary supplements orherbs. However, it is interesting to note that most ofthe dietary supplements listed were not in the topten most commonly used supplements.
