  • Pharmacists’' views on involvement in pharmacy practice research: Strategies for facilitating participation Carol Armour Martha Brillant Ines Krass Medicina Australia Pharmacies Focus Groups Attitude of Health Personnel In order for community pharmacy practice tocontinue to evolve, pharmacy practice research onpotential new services is essential. This requires theactive participation of community pharmacists. Atpresent the level of involvement of communitypharmacists in pharmacy practice research isminimal. Objectives: To ascertain the attitudes of a group ofresearch-experienced community pharmaciststowards participating in research; to investigate thebarriers and facilitators to participation; to identifypotential strategies to increase the involvement ofcommunity pharmacists in research. Methods: A focus group was conducted with apurposive sample of 11 research-experiencedcommunity pharmacists. A pharmacist academicmoderated the focus group using a semi-structuredinterview guide. The participants were asked abouttheir attitudes towards research, previousinvolvement in research, barriers to theirinvolvement and strategies to overcome thesebarriers. The session was audio-taped and noteswere taken by an observer. Thematic analysis of thenotes and audio-tape transcripts was conducted. Results: Three themes emerged aroundpharmacists’ attitudes towards research:pharmacists’ perception of the purpose of research, pharmacists’ motivation for involvement in research, and pharmacists’ desired role in research. Barriersto research participation were grouped into fourthemes: pharmacists’ mindset, communication, infrastructure (time, money and staff), andskills/knowledge. Strategies to address each ofthese barriers were suggested. Conclusions: Participants recognised theimportance of research towards advancing theirprofession and this was a motivating factor forinvolvement in research. They perceived their rolein research primarily as data collection. A series ofpractical strategies to overcome the barriers to participation were offered that researchers maywish to consider when promoting researchoutcomes and designing research projects. 2007 artículo científico 1885-642X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=69050202 https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050202/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050202/html/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050202/69050202.epub https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050202/movil en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=690 Pharmacy Practice application/pdf Centro de investigaciones y Publicaciones Farmacéuticas Pharmacy Practice (España) Num.2 Vol.5
