| contents | Pharmacological strategies for the management of cancer pain in developing countries Afekhide E. Omoti Caroline E. Omoti Medicina Pain Neoplasms Analgesics Pain associated with cancer is often under treatedespecially in the developing countries where thereare problems of poor economy, poor purchasingpower of the citizens, absence of effective nationalhealth insurance schemes, poor manpower, fakeadulterated and expired drugs, poor drug storageconditions; adverse temperature conditionscombined with poor power supply which may affectdrug efficacy. There is also poor understanding ofthe physiopharmacology of cancer painmanagement by health care providers. Assessmentof the severity of the pain by location, oncologicaltype, as well as psychosocial, emotional andenvironmental factors are necessary. The pain oftenoccurs from malignancy, from procedures done todiagnose, stage and treat the malignancy, and fromthe toxicities of therapy used in treating the cancer. The first priority of treatment is to control painrapidly and completely, as judged by the patient. The second priority is to prevent recurrence of pain.Analgesic drugs are given by the ladder, by theclock and by the appropriate route using theanalgesic ladder guideline proposed by the WorldHealth Organization (WHO). The pharmacologicalaspects of various drugs used in the managementof cancer pain are discussed. 2007 artículo científico 1885-642X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=69050301 https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050301/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050301/html/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050301/69050301.epub https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050301/movil en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=690 Pharmacy Practice application/pdf Centro de investigaciones y Publicaciones Farmacéuticas Pharmacy Practice (España) Num.3 Vol.5 |
