contents Psychotropic and psychoactive drugs and hospitalization rates in nursing facility residents James W. Cooper Megan H. Freeman Christopher L. Cook Allison H. Burfield Medicina United States Hospitalization Psychotropic Drugs Skilled Nursing Facilities The purpose of this study was to determine if therewere any differences in hospitalization rates due tototal psychoactive drug “load” between those usingand not or formerly using psychotropic andpsychoactive medications in a skilled nursingfacility; to determine if the diagnosis of dementiaand the change in use and load of psychotropic andpsychoactive drugs influenced hospitalization rates. Methods: An observational retrospective cohortstudy was conducted of patient chart, facilitydisposition changes and consultant pharmacistreports data from a skilled nursing facility of morethan 100 beds. Some177 patients resident for 30 ormore days over a 19 month period of 2978 patientmonthsdata were tabulated. A monthly repeatedmeasuresassessment method that incorporated allconditions, diseases and medication changes wasdone on each resident to determine patientdemographics, medication usage, andhospitalizations. Results: The rates of hospitalization ranged from0.04 to 0.07 per patient/month for any psychoactiveusage in those with and without dementia as adiagnosis. The rate of hospitalization during thestudy period for those with no current psychotropicnor regular psychoactive usage was 0.02 and0.03/pt./month for those respectively with andwithout the diagnosis of dementia, yet 86% of thissample had used psychotropics or otherpsychoactive drugs before the period ofobservation. Conclusion: Preliminary evidence is offered thatsuggests psychotropics and psychoactive drugs andthe total “load” of these drugs may be associatedwith an increase in the rate and risk of allhospitalizations within a single skilled nursingfacility. 2007 artículo científico 1885-642X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=69050308 https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050308/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050308/html/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050308/69050308.epub https://www.redalyc.org/journal/690/69050308/movil en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=690 Pharmacy Practice application/pdf Centro de investigaciones y Publicaciones Farmacéuticas Pharmacy Practice (España) Num.3 Vol.5
