Physiologicalalterations induced by the aging process makethese individuals more susceptible to chronicdiseases and, consequently, to increased drugutilization.Objective: To describe the profile of drug utilizationin the elderly living in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.Methods: An observational and cross-sectionalpopulation-based study to investigate thecharacteristics of the population, sources ofinformation and types of drugs used by the elderlywas performed. Four hundred and eighty patientswere recruited from data supplied by the City Hall ofPorto Alegre. The elderly were interviewedindividually during the period from January to May2006 by trained interviewers. A validatedpharmacotherapy questionnaire was used for datacollection and data were tabulated and analyzed bythe SPSS 11.5 computer program.Results: Of the 480 patients interviewed, 13.8% didnot use any medication. Cardiovascular systemdrugs represented the pharmacological class mostused by the elderly (64.0%). When ill, 71.9% ofthese individuals visited the doctor, while 36.9%self-medicated. For the majority (50.2%), drugswere identified by their labels.
