Albon Medicina Patient Pharmacist Participation Decision Making Cooperative Behavior Introduction: A study was undertaken to examinethe feasibility of using the physician-based InformedShared Decision Making (ISDM) framework forteaching pharmacy students competencies toeffectively develop therapeutic relationships withpatients.Objectives: To: (1) assess the relevance andimportance of the physician-developed ISDMcompetencies for pharmacy practice, (2) determinewhich competencies would be easiest and hardestto practice, (3) identify barriers to implementingISDM in pharmacy practice, and (4) identify typicalsituations in which ISDM is or could be practiced.Methods: Twenty pharmacists representing 4different practices were interviewed using astandardized interview protocol.Results: Pharmacists acknowledged that majority ofthe physician-based competencies were relevant topharmacy practice; although not all competencieswere considered to be most important. Competency#1 (Develop a partnership with the patient) wasfound to be the most relevant, the most importantand the easiest to practice of all the competencies.While no one competency was identified as beinghard to practice, there were several barriersidentified to practicing ISDM.
