Hassali Asrul Akmal Shafie Medicina Drugs Generic Practice Malaysia Attitudes Objective: To explore the consumers’ perceptionsand knowledge towards issues surrounding genericmedicines utilization in Penang, Malaysia.Methods: A cross sectional survey was conductedwith consumers who attended the annual Universityopen day. Using convenience sampling, surveyforms were distributed to the respective consumersvia the help of a group of trained 1st year pharmacystudents. For a period of 5 days, 400 respondentshad participated in the survey. Analysis of theresponse from the collected forms yielded in 396usable forms.Results: Only 28.3% (n=112) of the respondentswere familiar with the term “generic medicines”.More than 70% of the respondents do not know thatgeneric medicines can be marketed under differentnames. About 34% (n=38) of consumers stated thatthey had been given information regarding genericsby their pharmacists. In terms of side effects, about32% (n=127) of the respondents felt that genericmedicines may cause more side effects thanbranded medicines. Majority of the consumerssurveyed (64%) understand that generic cost lesscompared to their branded counterparts.Conclusion: This survey showed that there is a gapin consumers’ knowledge and understanding aboutgeneric medicines.
