As a result, activated carbons have extensive specific surface areas. Currently, granular activated carbons produced from coconut shells are widely used for gold recovery from alkaline cyanide solutions. Magnetic activated carbons (MACs) for gold recovery, synthesized from sources different that the traditional ones, have been developed at the University of Utah, mixing a carbon source with a magnetic precursor, and putting the mixture under controlled conditions of temperature and gaseous phase composition.
