The progressive expansion of the cities not only implies modification of ecosystems, but it is also associated with the introduction of pest species. In this sense, it is important to evaluate how native species act as pest control. To assess this, we present an analysis of the diet, based on pellets, of Tyto alba (Barn owl) in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. Based on 32 pellets, collected between April and June 2017, a total of 154 individual prey items were recorded of nine species. Rodents were the most abundant prey with 129 records (84%) as well as the ones with the highest biomass, 49 g (93%). More importantly, both the biomass and the abundance of the genus Rattus (Rats) were significantly higher when compared to the other prey species. It is evident that T. alba plays a role in pest control in the city of Cuenca. These findings are similar to those reported for T. alba in several localities across the continent; consequently, it is a key species in the control of pest rodents with an evident positive effect on the health of urban ecosystems. 2018 artículo científico 1390-5384 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=726180883005 es http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=7261 Avances en Ciencias e Ingenierías application/pdf Universidad San Francisco de Quito Avances en Ciencias e Ingenierías (Ecuador) Num.1 Vol.10
