- Adaptación de una variedad heterogénea de maíz a la región Alto Andina, usando la selección mazorca – hilera modificada Manuel de la Cruz Díaz Ricardo Sevilla Panizo Multidisciplinaria (Ciencias Naturales y Exactas) Cold tolerance Selection cycles Foreign germplasm Gain of selection Meteorological parameters The cold weather and drought are two negative factors that limit the maize productivity in the highlands of the Andean region. Races of maize from the Andean region have grain traits characterized for exceptional softness and palatability. Those traits can be lost when the Andean races are crossed with other germplasm. This could be a limitation to introduce foreign germplasm into Andean maize, such as the northern region cold tolerance in the early stage of development. In 1986, a project to improve the productivity of an experimental variety formed with Peruvian and foreign germplasm in Jauja, Peru, at 3350 meters above sea level, was developed using the modified ear to row selection method. The method of selection allows to improve others characters as cold tolerance, maintaining the Andean type of ear and grain. Selection intensity for grain yield was 20% among families. Average selection gain for grain yield was 10.71% per cycle. Selection goal was to adapt the new variety for cold tolerance and consequently data related to rain, radiation and critical temperatures were recorded. Adjusted grain yield by climate data resulted in a grain yield of 10.1 t ha-1 for the 12th cycle of selection, and 4.4 t ha-1 for the original population. The selection method allowed maintains the Andean ear and kernel type and other cold tolerance traits and also the introduced cold tolerance in early stages of development trait proper of foreign germplasm. 2019 artículo científico 1390-5384 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=726180885008 es http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=7261 Avances en Ciencias e Ingenierías application/pdf Universidad San Francisco de Quito Avances en Ciencias e Ingenierías (Ecuador) Num.1 Vol.11
