contents Astaxanthin production by Phaffia rhodozyma in a fedbatch culture using a low cost medium feeding Jesús Ramírez Noemí Obledo Melchor Arellano Enrique Herrera Multidisciplinarias (Ciencias Sociales) Fed batch pH stat Astaxanthin Phaffia rhodozyma The mutant strain 25-2 of Phaffia rhodozyma was grown in Yucca medium using a fed-batch culture system. Thefeeding control in the culture medium was carried out in response to pH changes (acid to alkaline) caused by the metabolicactivity of the yeasts. This change was understood as a signal of low nutrients of the culture and, therefore, as the trigger toactivate the feeding system. The carbon and nitrogen source were maintained between 15-25 g l -1 and 0.5-1.0 g l -1 respectively.Yeast extract (1.6 g l-1) was supplemented in the feeding medium. Air flow was increased 0.2 l min-1 every 12 hours until 2.6 lmin-1, at 84 hours. Under these conditions, a lineal growth and pigment formation during almost whole cultivation period waspossible until the oxygen dissolved concentration was limiting (<20%). The adequate nutrients supplementation, mainly yeastextract and oxygen, increased the astaxanthin and biomass formation significantly. The maximum astaxanthin productionachieved was 23,810 µg l-1, whereas the formation of biomass was 39 g l-1 2006 artículo científico 1665-5745 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=73000405 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=730 e-Gnosis application/pdf Universidad de Guadalajara e-Gnosis (México) Num.4
