Binstock Demografía Recent studies indicate significant changes in family formationpatterns in Argentina, particularly since the 1960s. Marriage postponement and the increase in consensualunions are highlighted among those changes, particularly for the City of Buenos Aires. This paper adds to this literature using new data from the Buenos Aires Annual Household Survey (2002). This survey includes a series of questions that allows us to reconstruct family formation and dissolution trajectories and thereforeadvance in the analysis of this phenomenon from a longitudinalperspective. Results show a trend in marriagepostponement that started with the generation born in the1960s. Further, this trend is not entirely explained bythe increase in consensual unions as the way to initiate afirst union. Consensual unions have gradually increasedto become the most common way to form a first union, starting with the generation born in the 1970s.
