| contents | Egypt: Politics in the New Millennium Maye Kassem Relaciones Internacionales Egypt democratization It seems that with the new millennium, some potentially interesting changes have emerged within theEgyptian political arena. Whether these are linked to attempts at US democratic promotion in theMiddle East is difficult to substantiate. What seems clear however is such reforms appear to haveproduced only the most minor of changes to the prevailing authoritarian system of contemporaryEgypt. These changes have included reforms ranging from changes in legislative electionsprocedures (2000); internal re-structuring within the NDP(2001/2); a proposed revision ofpresidential referendum procedures (March 2005); followed by the first presidential elections inEgypt (September 2005) and new legislative elections a few months later (November-December2005). This article will examine these political developments in an effort to gauge the degree towhich such changes can potentially contribute towards the democratization of Egyptian politics in thenew millennium. 2006 artículo científico 2386-9453 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=76701207 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=767 Revista UNISCI application/pdf Universidad Complutense de Madrid Revista UNISCI (España) Num.12 |
