contents Art and human nature Mirta Toledo Psicología African Identity Latin art Diversity American art This article presents a visual artist´s point of viewabout art. This view confronts the Eurocentric traditionalcannon with some ignored, but valuabletraditions, thus proposing a contra-canon. Theseideas are examined on the light of a variety ofsources, including prehistoric, pre-Columbian, and20th century art expressions, in a variety of media, from sculpture to literature. Recent art expressionsare characterized by their incorporation of minorityvalues and perspectives that challenge “universal”views. Using samples of works from Latino andAfrican American artists, the author shows that, even today, art is a means to know the world and itspeople, to exhibit personal life, to create personalsymbolism, and to show one´s identity or the searchfor it. Like the human nature it represents, art hasmultiple faces. 2008 artículo científico 1794-4724 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=79926104 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=799 Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana application/pdf Universidad del Rosario Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana (Colombia) Num.1 Vol.26
