Individuals were asked aboutmedical prescription, name of medicine, socio-demographic characteristics of those for which medicineswere acquired and issues related to the Health Social Security General System (affiliation, type ofregimen, level of satisfaction with health services). They were also inquired about their knowledge of the side-effects and therapeutic effects of medicines acquired. Analysis of information was done usingdescriptive indicators such as: means and percentages and the cross-tabulation of variables of interestfor investigating association. Association analysis was done by calcutation of the odds ratio (OR) andtesting the significance level by Chi-squared.Results: 194 of 350 individuals surveyed (55.4%) has no medical prescription at the time theybought medicines. Self-prescription was statistically associated to: poor socio-economical status, lackof affiliation to social security. Lack of knowledge regarding side effects of medicines self-prescribedwas considerably high among population studies.Conclusiones: Self-prescription is a problem of high prevalence in Barranquilla, which showed to beindependent of the degree of education of the population whereas it was related to the populationeconomical conditions and accessibility of health services 2002 artículo científico 0120-5552 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=81701604 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=817 Salud Uninorte application/pdf Universidad del Norte Salud Uninorte (Colombia) Num.16
