- Polyphony and embodiment: a critical approach to the theory of autopoiesis Paulo C. Chagas Arte The term autopoiesis was invented by the neurobiologists Maturana and Varela(1980) as a definition of life. Living systems are autopoietic systems as theyproduce and reproduce their own constitutive elements including the boundariesthat separate them from the environment. Luhmann extends the concept ofautopoiesis to social systems, which use communication as their particular mode ofautopoietic reproduction. Art is a functional subsystem of the society that operatesin the boundary between consciousness and social systems. This articleapproaches the theory of autopoiesis through the relationship between polyphonyand embodiment. It discusses some ideas about sound, aural perception and musicin terms of autopoiesis. 2005 artículo científico 1697-0101 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=82200915 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=822 Trans.
