- An afrocentric approach to musical performance in the black south Atlantic: the candombe drumming in Uruguay Luis Ferreira Arte Afro Candombe Black Music Black Atlantic Afrocentricity The Candombe drumming by people of African descent in Uruguay is a sound case in theSouthern end of the so called Black Atlantic. This paper analyzes style and interactive fluencyin the body movements that generate sound and music, following the meanings attributed toeach drum by noted expert drum musicians. It is argued how African cultural principles organizethe musical performance suggesting that these music and dance practices may be fruitfullyapproached from an Afrocentered hermeneutical perspective.
