Evora, today a town of medium size, the social prestigewas attached, up to the XIXth century, to the noble quality and this quality was expressedby the possession of a palace, situated in any part of the city. Later on, the manifestationof prestige rested upon the possession of a noble house situated in one of the mainstreets of the city, the narrow streets being inhabited by poor people who, thus, lived inthe immediate surroundigs of wealthy houses.
