The complex patterns oftenfound in evaluations of medicinal plant extracts suggest that the effects of plantdrugs may often be based on a more complex pharmacodynamic basis than themore usual drug/effect relationships. Pharmacological properties of herbals mayresult from various active ingredients, interactions among those, or ingredientspossessing multiple mechanisms of action. This paper focuses on thepsychopharmacology of herbals in the light of newer paradigms of psychotropicdrug action.
