Jorge Agrociencias liver terpenes intestine Senecio grisebachii Intoxication caused by Senecio spp is characterized by an irreversibledamage of the liver cells due to the action of pyrrolizidine alkaloidspresent in these plants. They contain other groups of volatile components, such as terpenes, which may also be toxic. An aqueous extract obtained by water steam distillation of Seneciogrisebach ii fresh flowers was orally given to mice (0.5 mL/mouse/day)for 30 days. Animals were observed periodically. Weight loss, pale mucousmembrane color, low body temperature and decreased capillary refill timewere symptoms compatible with dehydration.Histopathological findings showed congestion and edema in smalland large intestines. Liver showed hydropic and fatty degeneration withcentrilobular necrosis. Results indicate that terpenes alter membranepermeability regulation processes on the epitheliums of the digestive system 2003 artículo científico 0325-8718 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=86432209 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=864 RIA.
