- Synthesis of trimethylolpropane trioleate by using stannous oxalate catalyst Oguzhan Ilgen Sumeyye Bilgic Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining Abstract This study was conducted to synthesize trimethylolpropane trioleate (TMPTO) using a stannous oxalate catalyst and investigate the dependence of the esterification rate on reaction variables. The highest esterification rate of approximately 99% was achieved at a 2.75:1 oleic acid/trimethylolpropane, 1.5% catalyst amount, 180°C reaction temperature, 6 h reaction time and 1000 rpm reaction conditions. The TMPTO structure was confirmed by comparing Fourier transform infrared analyses of the reaction product with the commercial product. TMPTO was synthesized by achieving high oleic acid conversion, and the resulting product was found to have physical and chemical properties comparable to those of TMPTO obtained in literature studies and the commercial product. The Eley–Rideal mechanism proposed within the scope of the kinetic study involves the surface reaction of trimethylolpropane and adsorbed oleic acid. Comparison of the experimental and calculated reaction rates showed that they were compatible. 10.1002/bbb.70149 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
