contents Sulfated Polysaccharides in the Hallmarks of Metabolic Syndrome: Functions and Mechanisms Fuqiang Zhao Chuan Li Xin Zhang Kexue Zhu Chao Zhao Deming Gong Lulu Zhu Yongcheng Li Jun Cao Shaoping Nie Food Frontiers ABSTRACT Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common endocrine disorder. Studies have demonstrated that various characteristics, including glucose and lipid metabolism disorders, hormonal dysregulation, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, complications, and disruption of gut homeostasis, usually accompany MetS. These MetS characteristics lead to severe health and financial problems. Sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) are polysaccharides that contain sulfate groups in their molecular structure. This review critically evaluated the literature by discussing the effects of natural or modified SPs on MetS characteristics and the underlying mechanisms. The study highlighted the potential of SPs as MetS treatment agents and the limitations that need to be overcome based on the summarized data. The comprehensive review of the literature shows that SPs improved glucose, lipid metabolism, and hormone levels and relieved oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and MetS complications. Meanwhile, the gut microbiota and its metabolites played essential roles in this process. Furthermore, the SPs’ structure, including the degree of substitution, the molecular weight, and the conformation, also significantly affected the efficacy in alleviating MetS. SPs have great prospects for developing new functional foods to improve MetS. Future studies should focus on developing streamlined methods to dissect the fine structure of SPs and combining molecular biology and multi‐omics analysis to explore the structure–activity relationship at both cellular and animal levels. 10.1002/fft2.70121 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/
