Hirsch Obesity ABSTRACT The presence of excess weight is no longer a distinguishing feature between patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and those with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Obesity treatment in patients with T2D improves glycemic control and reduces or even eliminates medication burden. Robust evidence and clear guidelines exist to support and direct effective weight management in patients with T2DM. Now, however, rates of obesity in patients with T1D rival those found in the general population, yet little is known about the efficacy, safety, and unique considerations of obesity treatment (lifestyle modifications, pharmacology, and surgery) in this population.
