  • Characteristics of Inclusions During the Refining of 48 MnV Crankshaft Steel and Thermodynamic Design of Slag Composition for High Cleanliness Jian Zhao Jinlong Lu Guoguang Cheng Xiang Wang Hu Long Zhongzhong Xun steel research international This paper systematically evaluates the variations in molten steel composition, slag fluctuations, and inclusion characteristics during the refining process of 48 MnV nonquenched and tempered crankshaft steel. A rational slag composition window for achieving high‐cleanliness steel production is proposed, and the resulting changes in inclusion number and size distribution after process optimization are further tracked and statistically analyzed. The continuous reaction between SiO 2 in the slag and aluminum dissolved in the steel leads to secondary contamination of the molten steel, thereby partially inhibiting the ability of slags to absorb and remove inclusions. Large‐sized inclusions persist throughout the entire refining process, and CaO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 inclusions with sizes of approximately 100 μm are still observed at the end of RH refining, originating mainly from slag entrainment. By controlling the SiO 2 content of the slag within the range of 5%–9 wt%, the equilibrium aluminum content in the steel at the end of refining can be maintained at approximately 0.012 wt%–0.0175 wt%, a range that is conducive to maximizing steel cleanliness. Provided that effective slag melting and sufficiently high inclusion absorption efficiency are ensured, increasing the CaO/Al 2 O 3 ratio of the slag and moderately elevating the Si content in the steel can suppress the additional reduction of SiO 2 by aluminum in the steel. After these improvements, the frequency of large inclusions in the steel is significantly reduced, with the tundish samples being dominated by CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO inclusions smaller than 5 μm and CaO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 inclusions smaller than 10 μm. 10.1002/srin.70567 http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/termsAndConditions#vor
