contents Fasting for Inner Peace: Voice of the Syriac Christians Jeanne‐Nicole Saint‐Laurent Modern Theology AbstractThis article examines the theology of fasting in Syriac Christianity, highlighting its role in attaining inner peace and overcoming spiritual conflict. Syriac Christian authors, such as Ephrem the Syrian, Aphrahat, Jacob of Serugh, and Isaac of Antioch, linked fasting to the restoration of Edenic peace, spiritual warfare against Satan, and preparation for divine encounters. Fasting was seen as a remedy for greed, gluttony, and disordered desires, aligning the body and soul with God's will. It was also a communal practice to address societal injustices and prevent war. Through typological interpretations of biblical narratives, Syriac Christians viewed fasting as a non‐violent weapon for peace, a pathway to spiritual transformation, and a preparation for the Eucharistic feast. The article highlights fasting's dual role in personal spiritual discipline and communal reconciliation, offering insights into its enduring relevance in Christian practice. 10.1111/moth.70004 http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/termsAndConditions#vor
