| contents | Considering the Impact of Online Participant Setting: Implications for Replication and Validity Devin I. Fowlie Andrew D. W. Hall Jill A. Jacobson Social and Personality Psychology Compass ABSTRACT Although the rapid expansion of online research in social psychology may have improved generalizability, it could adversely affect other factors relevant to replication and robustness of results. More specifically, we propose that social features of participants' environments, such as norms, situated conceptualizations, and social facilitation are different in the online environment, and that these features disproportionately impact social psychology research. We note that robust methods for understanding the impact of the online environment in social psychology is lacking and that researchers would benefit from a systematic consideration of the factors present in the online environment that could impact their research. We outline these considerations and suggest avenues for future research, with a particular emphasis on participants' setting as a factor of interest. 10.1111/spc3.70086 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ |
