contents
This study addresses discrepancies between direct (strain gauges) and indirect (LVDTs) strain measurements during uniaxial and triaxial compression tests on rock. While strain gauges provide accurate local measurements, they may fail under high temperatures or near peak and post-peak conditions. Indirect displacement measurements, although more robust, can include additional deformations from platen–sample contacts, leading to differences in recorded stress–strain responses.

An energy-based correction method is proposed to adjust platen-to-platen displacement measurements for more accurate axial strain estimation. For triaxial tests, radial and volumetric strains are derived from fluid volume changes within Hoek’s cell using modified calculations. The results show that part of the LVDT-recorded displacement is associated with contact deformations, but the effective energy transmitted to the specimen can be estimated to correct indirect measurements. The proposed methodology improves strain evaluation in compression testing and may be extended to other configurations, such as true triaxial tests.
