| contents |
This study investigates the effects of short-time austenitization on the mechanical properties and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) behavior of austempered ductile iron (ADI). For this purpose, Cu–Ni–Mo alloyed ductile iron was cast into sand molds and subsequently austenitized at 850 °C for 15, 30, and 60 minutes, followed by austempering in a salt bath at 260 °C for 90 minutes. Characterization was carried out using dilatometry, image analysis software, tensile and hardness testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that increasing the austenitization time led to higher carbon content in the austenite phase (both high-carbon and blocky types) and an increase in bainitic ferrite cell size, while the volume fractions of the transformation products varied accordingly. These microstructural changes were correlated with mechanical performance. The optimum balance between strength and ductility, as well as the maximum TRIP effect, was obtained in the sample austenitized for the shortest duration (15 minutes). Compared to the 45-minute austenitized sample, the 15-minute treatment improved tensile strength and total elongation by 146 MPa and 2.8%, respectively.
|
