| contents | <p>This paper examines the theoretical and methodological foundations for the study of cases in <em>Serbian Syntax</em> (1858) by Đura Daničić. The first Serbian syntax was written during the development of comparative-historical linguistics, when the main guiding idea of case syntax was the search for a common meaning of each case. Until the mid-19th century, the study of case semantics was dominated by the localistic theory of cases, according to which case meaning was derived from spatial relations accessible to direct observation. Localists placed primary emphasis on identifying the spatial meanings of cases. Daničić was evidently familiar with their postulates, as well as with the logic-grammatical theory, which explained case through syntactic functions. He implicitly distinguished between grammatical cases (nominative, genitive, and accusative), whose primary function is syntactic, and local cases (dative, instrumental, and prepositional), which primarily denote spatial relations.</p> |
