| contents | <p>This research examined the impact of ecological hazards on biodiversity in the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State. The objectives of the work were to determine the causes of biodiversity loss; and the consequences of ecological hazards on biodiversity in ONELGA. The research sought to know whether ecological hazards have significantly altered the nature of biodiversity in ONELGA; and how it has impacted negatively on biodiversity depletion and extinction of species in the locality. This research used the Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) theory to provide the theoretical focus and direction needed to address these issues under investigation. The thrust of the AGW theory was that human activities result in daily emission of Green greenhouse gases (GHGs) which alter the natural build-up, and climatic order of the environment. A descriptive research design and survey method were used. The sample size used for this study was 120 respondents purposively selected from the six clans of the local government. Both primary and secondary data were also used. A structured questionnaire was used for primary data collection. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. This research observed that ecological hazards have significantly altered the nature of biodiversity in ONELGA. It also observed that ecological hazards triggered the reduction in abundance and diversity of living organisms through the depletion and extinction of species in ONELGA. This research recommended the conservation of biological species by the government and people of Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, to benefit from its genetic resources.</p> |
