-
One of our readers wrote to the editors that
the information contained in a note from issue
27 (2021) under the title „Case of a Wren Troglodytes
troglodytes breeding in the corpse of a Goshawk
Accipiter gentilis” is inaccurate. The description
of the situation in the article does not
indicate actual breeding but only the presence of
a nest where breeding did not necessarily occur.
Male Winter Wrens build multiple nests within
their territory. During courtship, males lead
the females around to each nest and the female
chooses which nest to use for breeding. In the
case described in the article, there was no evidence
of breeding (chick feces, egg remains), so
the term „breeding” cannot be used in this case.
The authors fully agree with this comment, and
the actual title of the note should read: „Nest of
a Wren Troglodytes troglodytes breeding in the
corpse of a Goshawk Accipiter gentilis”.
